SHANG SHI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
In the midst of her Fulbright year in Taichung, Taiwan, Ida was invited to paint a mural with the theme of multi-culturalism at the school she served. The mural was finished in the fall of 2015. It is her hope that looking at the painting will inspire viewers to find simple peace and gratitude within their own lives that they will be able to spread to others. In Taichung, the painting has been recognized among the many schools in the city as a symbol of beauty and an open space for talking about human differences.
From the motto of the Asian Rural Institute in Japan (where the first Peace Tree-ty painting exists), “That we may live together,” from the vision of Fulbright, “A world with a little more knowledge and a little less conflict,” please take a look at the tree and reflect. What comes to mind? What can you do?

PROCESS
Parents, students, faculty members, and nearby college students interested in helping paint the mural combined their efforts in helping complete the project.

Over a weekend, Ida was commissioned to design and draw the painting. She helped organize parents, school faculty, students, and community members to help paint.
Below is documentation of the process, from the initial sketches to the finished painting.
Purpose
The Flag Tree was constructed to spark global thinking, to inspire viewers to think and live more peacefully, to improve the school's asthestics, and to accompany the school's new classroom, the Global Village.
The Global Village opened in Spring 2016 and teaches students more about other countries and cultures around the world. It shows students the usefulness of English as they write to people around the globe, teaches them culinarily skills as they make foods from other countries, and provides stimulating visuals from photos, books, and other hands-on activities.
